What Is Wheel Bolt Pattern?

A wheel bolt pattern, or lug pattern, is the arrangement of bolts or studs that attach a wheel to its hub. It can be found on almost any vehicle, from cars and trucks to motorcycles and bicycles. The number of bolts in a wheel bolt pattern affects the type of wheels that will fit on an automobile; for example, cars usually have four-lug patterns, while trucks may have six or eight-lug patterns.

How Is Bolt Pattern Measured?

The bolt pattern is determined by measuring the distance between two opposite studs on the wheel. Using this measurement, it can then be determined how many lugs are required to secure the wheel. This is called the “bolt circle diameter” (BCD). For example, if the BCD is 4.25”, then four lugs are required.

How Is Bolt Pattern Used?

The bolt pattern can also indicate what type of wheels will fit; certain vehicles may require specific wheels depending on their make and model. For instance, some car manufacturers use five-lug patterns while others use four-lug patterns; these wheels are not interchangeable between vehicles and must match exactly with the same measurements to secure them properly.
